Conversations with the Inspiring Renee Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Rodriguez.

Renee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a young girl, I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist. I shadowed a tv/film and beauty makeup artist during high school and beauty school and loved everything about it! I had planned on moving to Los Angeles right after high school to attend makeup school but my life took a different direction and I ended up staying in Tucson. A few years ago, I decided to quit my full-time job in the medical field to pursue my passion. I didn’t want my 20’s to pass me by and be “stuck” doing something I didn’t love, so I started working for a very talented bridal makeup artist and learned so much from her. I had the opportunity to really see what it was like to run a business, connect with other vendors and live out my passion. At the beginning of 2019, I was asked what I really loved to do and my answer was, “Making people feel beautiful about themselves.” I connected with an amazing woman and she helped me lay out the steps of starting my own business. A month later, I was on the road with a photographer, three models and two hairstylists to White Sands, New Mexico to take photos for the launch and branding of my new business, Radiate with ReneeJ. That photoshoot embodies how I want all women to feel after they leave my chair – radiating with confidence!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No way! It was a huge risk to quit my job and start my own business but I believe in taking risks to live the life you want! I think my biggest struggle was fear and self-doubt. “Am I good enough? Will people book my services? How will I find clients?” All the questions you start asking yourself make you feel like you should just give up. But I am very thankful to have my friends and family who support me and give me words of encouragement and advice when I need it. I was tested a lot throughout the process and things didn’t always go the way I wanted it to, but I’m glad I pushed through and saw the bigger picture!

My advice for young women starting their own journey is to collaborate with local people who see your vision and will help you get your name out there. Shadow as many people as you can in your field of interest and be open to learning from others! Also, take the risk and go for it! It may not go as planned but if you never try, you’re always going to wonder, “what if.” Nothing happens overnight. You need to stay persistent, work hard and become obsessed with what you’re working towards!

What should we know about Radiate with ReneeJ? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Radiate with ReneeJ Makeup and Hair offers makeup and hair services for weddings, photoshoots, quinceñeras, and other special events. I specialize in using HD airbrush foundation to give you a flawless makeup application that will last all day and night. I am most proud of my ability to connect with each client that sits in my chair. I want it to be a fun process for you from beginning to end! Most clients have never had their makeup done professionally, so I understand it can be a little nerve-racking if it is your first time. I listen to what you want and will communicate with you throughout the process to make sure I give you your desired look!

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I love Rachel Hollis! She’s an amazing business woman and I’m currently reading her book, Girl, Wash Your Face. It has helped me in all areas of my life and I highly recommend it!
