Conversations with the Inspiring Nissa Graun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nissa Graun.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nissa. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was a chronic yo-yo dieter since age 12. I struggled with losing and gaining the same 20-50 pounds over a twenty year period. Even with excessive amounts of exercise and many different diet programs, I was never able to reach a weight loss goal. Before I knew it, I always gained all of the weight back, plus more. I also struggled with many chronic health problems such as daily migraines, sinus infections, cystic acne, depression, anxiety and more.

When I became pregnant with my first son in 2013, I was at an all-time high weight and then gained more than 50 pounds during the pregnancy. I was also diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

After the pregnancy, I struggled for more than six months to take the weight off, yet the scale barely budged. My fasting blood sugars also still remained in the diabetic range.

I came across a book called Kick Your Fat in the Nuts, which taught me how to improve my digestion and nutrition. Following the advice in the book not only helped me reach my goal weight for the first time ever, but I also improved many of my chronic lifelong health problems. Also, my blood sugar fell to a normal range.

I regained some of the weight in 2016 since I became pregnant with my second son. The work I put into fixing my health meant I avoided gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy, despite being told it would be nearly impossible to avoid with my age and health history.

After the birth of my second son, I was easily able to lose the pregnancy weight, plus an additional 15 pounds with the low carb, high fat, nutrient dense plan I previously followed. Most of my weight loss is attributed to the nutrition side since I have traded my cardio addict ways for a few weekly walks to the park with my kids.

It has been 18 months since I reached my goal weight. I lost 90 pounds after my first pregnancy and 65 after my second. I easily maintain a 110-pound total loss and am in the best health of my life with a low carb, high fat ketogenic lifestyle. I also incorporate intermittent fasting for health and longevity benefits.

I love to inspire and spread the knowledge that has finally helped me conquer more than 20 years of weight and health struggles. I was recently featured in People Magazine’s 100 pounds down issue. I blog and post recipes to my website and help others with my Eating Fat is the New Skinny Instagram, Facebook page and group. I have two books available on Amazon, My Big Fat Life Transformation and The Lazy Keto Gourmet, to help walk people new to low-carb or those who struggle with low-carb. I also create online courses to bring the information to life and show people how they can incorporate the same info into their lives that helped me lose more than 100 pounds and maintain it long term.

I recently was asked by the author of Kick Your Fat in the Nuts, the original book that helped change my life forever, to work with him on several courses to bring this life-changing information to others.

Has it been a smooth road?
Using a low-carb, high-fat diet was not always easy for me. I have attempted different low-carb diets for almost 20 years before they finally became my lifestyle and the results stuck long term. Part of this was due to the very bad health and diet advice was given by the mainstream. I didn’t know who to listen to and ended up confused. Once I found valuable information that started to work, I kept researching further for answers that were right for my body, instead of general information that works for hardly anyone. It is important to always do your own research instead of taking the advice of health gurus or anyone else as the golden rule.

Once I took the time to improve my digestion, low-carb, high-fat became easy to follow and also became my new lifestyle instead of just another diet I was trying. This is an important distinction.

I also changed my mindset from societal norms of expecting to lose weight quickly to being patient and allowing my body time to heal. That helped me stick with this process long term and provide my body what it needed to thrive, instead of constant deprivation touted by many health gurus. That constant deprivation is what led to more than 20 years of health problems I dealt with. Now that I provide my body with plenty of nutrients, the health problems have improved substantially. I now eat nearly double what I did when I struggled with weight loss and health, yet I still maintain my lowest weight since jr high school.

I would love to speak directly to young women who are just starting their journey, so they don’t end up in a 20+ year weight loss struggle like I did. Now is the time to form healthy habits that are right for your body. This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect every day, but it does mean you have to eat real food that is right for your body the majority of the time. You also don’t need to spend hours in the gym each day like I did. Exercise is great for health, but overdoing exercise, especially cardio, can actually have harmful effects on your health. Quit thinking about the diet dogma of calories in versus calories out. Focus on real, nutrient dense food and your body will be happy.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Eating Fat is the New Skinny story. Tell us more about the business.
Too many people I think I am known as the keto girl. My work extends far beyond ketogenic diets since it took much more than keto diets for me to find long-term success. There is no one diet that is right for everyone, so I work with others to figure out which diet will help them hit their goals now and also help them maintain their results long term. I also help them figure out how to feel good while they reach their goals, instead of the typical miserable dieting experience most people face.

The online courses I created focus on figuring out which foods are right for your current body chemistry and digestive capabilities. They help people figure out how to improve chemistry imbalances to make health and weight loss effortless. They also show people how to improve their digestion with appropriate food choices and natural supplements. Not having the ability to digest and break down food appropriately is one of the biggest culprits in weight gain and health problems today, yet there aren’t many others, including doctors, that are teaching the importance of this.

My books on Amazon show women exactly the steps I took to lose the weight, as well as what I do now to maintain the 100+ pound loss long term. My Big Fat Life Transformation starts with my life at the height of my health problems and highest weight ever and breaks down the roadmap I took after each pregnancy to regain my health and end my struggle with yo-yo diets for good. The Lazy Keto Gourmet is filled with 50 recipes that I created and use daily to lose weight and also maintain the loss. Not only does it provide recipes, but it also talks about how to use the recipes for weight loss and better health long term.

What sets me apart from others is I believe you need to repair your health first and then weight loss will follow. Constant deprivation, whether it’s over restricting calories or over exercise, is never going to benefit your health long term. I advocate for people to eat more and exercise less for long-term success. This doesn’t mean to immediately double your food intake, and you’ll lose weight. It means overtime you need to eat more of the right foods that are right for you in order to build up your metabolism instead of breaking it down with low-calorie diets that will never work long term. This does take time and patience, but it also makes the process more enjoyable and maintaining the weight loss much more effortless.

I am most proud when I receive messages from other women who have finally stopped obsessing over the scale or over their calories, and they’re able to effortlessly lose weight while they also feel good during the process. It’s hard for many people to overcome the notion of weight loss only being about calories in versus calories out or what the scale says is the only measure of success or even that eating fat is going to make you fat. Once people finally understand none of that really matters, and that healthy fats are necessary for excellent health, it’s wonderful to watch them thrive in life instead of continuously struggle.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The women who inspire me the most are the women who are like me and have struggled with their weight and health long term, but finally figure out the right information for them to thrive. It’s amazing to see that moment when the switch has been flipped from long-term deprivation and misery to realizing that weight loss and improved health doesn’t have to be as complicated as most people make it out to be.

Even after reading my books or blogs, there are many women who still don’t believe it could be true that you don’t have to over-restrict your food or you may need to exercise less in order to find success. It’s hard to break past so many years of brainwashing by the diet and fitness industry. But when women finally get it and finally find their own long-term success, it makes me so happy and inspired to keep going and getting this message out to even more women.
