Conversations with the Inspiring Nicole Anne Fonovich, M.Ed., R.Y.T

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Anne Fonovich, M.Ed., R.Y.T.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first stepped on a yoga mat 20 years ago when I was twenty-two. One of my best friends and I went to the Himalayan Institute in Glenview, IL, where my journey began unbeknownst to me. Why are people drawn to yoga? I, like many, fell in love with the grace in which postures where held, the strength that is developed over years of dedicated practice, and positivity and over all good feeling that you receive both during and after each practice. I was really drawn to Yoga because I was born with a weak back and the only thing I knew how to do in life was to fight back and make the rest of my body as strong as I could. Seven surgeries later, I am here to tell you that yoga has made it possible for me to work through my depression surrounding this issue, helps me manage by pain, allows me to feel that I am doing something positive for my body and mind, has taught me humility and grace, and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

During periods of complete activity bans, I explored sound healing as an additional tool to assist me with finding balance in my life. Another tool found that helps transmit me to another place, a place in which I do not feel pain. If only briefly, at least it’s all-natural. Meditation, what can I say about this. This has been a life changer for me. Where have you been my whole life and why am I only finding out about you at 40, for real? Once I dove into this world, I was never the same. This transcendence allows you to heal in yet another powerful way. A more euphoric experience does not exist in the natural world; at least I have not found it. Holistic Nutrition got my attention as a way to heal my autoimmune disease naturally. This is something that I have always been fully aware of, but it was not until I studied it in school did I come to the conclusion that we are exactly what we eat. If we want to be healthy, we can eat our way there. It would be my privilege and honor to be able to give this energy and education back to others and to guide people on the healthy, natural path we were born to live.

I have an undergraduate Liberal Arts degree in Leadership and Advocacy from Kendall College located in Evanston, Illinois from which I graduated Cum Laude. From there, I went on the earn a Masters in Education from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was in the field of financial aid for over a dozen years helping students achieve their dreams. After the birth of my child, Lucas, I co-wrote a multilingual educational children’s book series (Luca Lashes) with my family in which my son is the inspiration behind the 9 titles. Years later, following my lifelong passion, I went back to school and attended Southwest Institute of Holistic Arts in Tempe, Arizona to receive my Holistic Practitioner degree, specializing in Advanced Yoga Training (500 hour certified), Yoga Nidra (Meditation), Sound Healing (Gong Master), Restorative Yoga, Holistic Nutrition, and Life Coaching. I launched Nicole Anne Yoga, a mobile yoga company where we bring the zen to you, last year.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My road has certainly had its struggles. Through my healing journey, I was able to move through energy that had been locked in my body for a lifetime. This is very important work as a healer. If you are still carrying old unhealed wounds, they get in the way or come up again when helping others through theirs. Using yoga, meditation, doing shadow work, life coaching, transformational yoga therarpy, massage therapy, Hypnotherapy, NET, NLP, Acupuncture, and probably every other form of alternative healing you could imagine or recommend, something finally clicked, a shift happened, change transpired. Due to my Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) that I was born with and autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, and chronic pain were common friends that lead to comfort eating and isolation. Healing from past wounds, identifying my triggers, and re-programming the old patterns that were no longer serving me were all part of my journey to open up my third business helping others. Each step along the way I took was painful, gut wrenching, and soul searching at times. The advise that I would give a young woman starting their journey is to “do the work”! No matter how hard something is or how bad you are at it, keep your eye on the prize because before you know it, it will be yours!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Nicole Anne Yoga story. Tell us more about the business.
Nicole Anne Yoga offers private sessions or group events in Yoga Nidra (meditation), Kirtan (music meditation), Sound Healing, Life Coaching, Transformational Yoga Therapy, Yoga (all levels), and Holistic Nutrition. We are a mobile yoga company that works all around the Valley! We host Meditation/Sound Healing Events most weekends and rotate them at Spirit of Yoga in Tempe, Ocotillo Pilates in Chandler, Sun Lakes Country Club in Sun Lakes, and Y Fitness Training in Gilbert. Our teachers also teach a 1-hour yoga class once a week at 10:30 am at The Nile in Mesa, where each instructor gets to showcase their signature style! All instructors graduated from Southwest Institute of Healing Arts and rotate in and out of the different events we do around the Valley, so each experience is slightly different depending on the team for the day. The thing that I am most proud of is that we all went to school together, trained together, and have been working together since day one. Our foundation and basis of knowledge are rock solid.

We recently started a Kirtan Band, name still undecided at this time but leaning towards Kirtanga. This is our newest project for connecting with the community, oneself, and each other. Yolking our love of Yoga and music together and delivering it in a call and response fashion which allows for one to slip into meditation effortlessly is magical. Watch for fun stuff happening on this front soon!!!

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
One of the most impactful women in my life was one of my teachers, Laura McKinzie. Laura will be one of my yoga teachers from SWIHA that especially stands out. She made the greatest impact on my life by changing my opinion of what a yoga teacher is. Her grace, poise, professionalism, tact, understanding, and beautiful nature allowed me to see another side of teaching. She is the kind of teacher I hope to become. She is a mentor, a Guru if you will, a supporter, and role model. She embodies all of these qualities. Just amazing!
