Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Blum.
Kayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was a senior in high school, I developed an eating disorder. What started as a small act of trying to be healthy, turned into a full-blown obsession. I started eating less, exercising more, and constantly picking apart my body. I compared myself to every girl who walked near me, every girl I saw on Instagram, and every girl I wish I could be. I hit a very low point in my life and when I went off to college at ASU, I hid my disorder from everyone. It got to the point where I made myself physically sick and it was time to get help. I started seeing a therapist and she opened my eyes to how blinded I had been. She truly is my saving grace. I was in therapy for two years and decided I wanted to learn as much as I could about exercise and nutrition. I changed majors from education to exercise and wellness. I spent my time learning the truth behind nutrition, exercise, and the true meaning of health. I loved it. I decided to turn this obsession into a career, which quickly turned into my passion. I now spend my days helping other women find their inner strength, live healthier and happier lives, and am always seeking to make a lasting impact on someone’s life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road! There will always be ups and downs in everyone’s journey. However, someone who struggles with their relationship with food or body image will have a whole different set of problems to face. My biggest advice for women who are just starting on their journey, find your why and start your journey in a healthy way. What is your why for wanting to embark on this journey? Weight loss is not a why. Why do you want to lose weight? You want to look better, you want to find a partner, you think it will make you happier, etc. All these things are not controlled by your weight. Work on your relationship with yourself first and foremost. How do you start in a healthy way? It is important to protect your relationship with food. Starting fad diets is not the way to protect this (no carbs, keto, no gluten, fat-free, etc.). Start making healthy swaps if that’s what you want to do, drink more water, eat more fruits and vegetables, eat your carbs, add in a little more protein, but most importantly, love yourself each step of the way.
What should we know about Bluming Fitness? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have been a personal trainer for three years and have loved every second of it. I focus specifically on balance and moderation. I teach all my clients about balanced eating and getting their body moving. I am also in the process of creating a program called Balanced By Blum, where I will work specifically with women who struggle with their relationship with food. What sets me apart is that I truly care about my client’s overall health, not just about their physical goals. You can see a trainer who will put you into a calorie deficit to help you lose weight quickly; or you can come and meet me, who will teach you about proper nutrition, why eating your favorite foods is okay, and help you get long-lasting results mentally and physically.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I feel as though opportunity comes to those who work hard. Men and women are well positioned for any career path they choose as long as they are passionate and work hard at it.
