Conversations with the Inspiring Heather Conway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Conway.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started teaching Group Fitness over 20 years ago in Alaska, my hometown, after being a fitness enthusiast and athlete. I was on a National Award Winning Dance Team and soccer team in high school and that carried over into my passion for fitness and eventually instructing fitness classes. Being active has always been important in my life and in my athletics. I loved that I could inspire and motivate others to find fitness and health in their lives as well. It is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever had, it gives people health and wellness that is immeasurable.

Just recently, I became a Zyia Active Rep, selling activewear, which just fell in line with my work as a Fitness Instructor. Zyia Active is a small online business and I love that I can be a part of a community that offers quality activewear at reasonable prices and supports independent entrepreneurs!

I’ve been a Real Estate Agent for over four years now and decided to become an agent after my brother opened up his own Brokerage and I was looking to add something new and challenging in my life. Our Brokerage, Charity Realty AZ, is a small Real Estate Business located in Litchfield Park, AZ. Our Brokerage donates 10% of our commissions on our clients’ behalf. We focus on smaller local charities in the Phoenix area, so that we are giving back to our community. Giving donations to charities is a very rewarding part of my job as an agent, every charity is very grateful for the donations we provide and it makes it all worth it, to know that people in need are being taken care of!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Allow yourself to be a beginner and don’t be afraid of being a beginner. We were all beginners at something at some point in our life. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either. I think we are all intimidated by successful people and we don’t want to look like we don’t know what we are talking about, so we hold back, don’t ask the questions or try to fake it until you make it. But I’m a true believer in being honest and if you don’t know something, ask someone you trust.

I suggest finding a mentor you trust. One you can ask those questions you might be afraid to ask, in fear of looking incompetent. I think most successful people like to help others. I believe they are more understanding than we give them credit for and because we are intimidated by them, we don’t ask the necessary questions for our growth or our own success. Find someone that will encourage you and make you feel that every question you ask is important, someone who inspires and motivates you to grow and find your own success!

Not everything will go as planned, but if you are patient and graceful with yourself, and put in the work, with time and experience, success will fall into place!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
In my Fitness work, I’m known as Hardcore Heather! I offer high-intensity workouts that are not for the beginner. I love working with athletes, but I work with all age groups, my older clients are some of the strongest and most inspiring people! I have several certifications, but I follow a Functional Fitness Boot Camp style format, using various equipment and fitness styles I’ve learned throughout the 20 plus years I have taught. I love choreographing workouts! In my current ConwayFit class, we celebrate birthdays with special workouts geared towards them, using their age or birthdate to format the class, it’s a fun way to celebrate them. I also teach Yoga and incorporate that at the end of class or as a complementary to the high-intensity classes I teach, it’s all about balance!

My Zyia Independent Rep business is a new business for me and I am excited for the opportunity it offers. I love clothes and am particular about my activewear. Zyia is one of the best quality clothes I have worn. Their leggings are game changers for me and my workouts and what sold me on becoming a rep. I get to wear and sell the best quality workout clothes while teaching class, it’s a win-win!

As a Realtor, as stated before, our Brokerage gives 10% of our commissions on our clients’ behalf. Our clients appreciate this and it’s our way to give back to the community and support our local charities!

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I grew up in a family of five children, as the middle child, so there were always compromises. My father was in the Coast Guard, we moved around when I was younger, which gave me a lot of experiences with different people and areas of the States. It helped me with communication skills and learning how to talk and deal with many different people as an adult, which is an important skill when working with clients as a realtor.

Growing up as an athlete, I played select soccer at the age of nine, the youngest on the team, I had to work hard for a spot on the roster. That started my passion for exercise and work ethic for sports that carried into high school and college and now as an adult in my fitness profession.
