Today we’d like to introduce you to Desma Estrada.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Desma. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Sabor a Mi Seasoning and Salsas March 2019.
After I had my 3rd child, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and was placed on medication, this unfortunate news sent me into a little depression not wanting to be placed on another medication for the depression my husband and I started to do research on natural ways to reduce and even overcome high blood pressure. He suggested building me a garden (if you’ve experienced the Arizona heat, you’d understand my reaction when first hearing this). He was persistence and took matters into his own hands by just building it. Thank goodness he did. Once I saw my garden growing and full of the chilies and tomatoes we had planted, I wanted to do more, we added cilantro, onions, garlic, and parsley. It was beautiful and it brought me peace and joy. With growing our own produce, we started making our own seasonings and being Latina, I needed to have my salsas.
I’ve always had a passion for cooking, my mother is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico and growing up, I spent my time in the kitchen with her learning her recipes and taking in all I could. So, our seasonings and salsas are true to our roots, they are authentic and I’m so proud of them. I’m here to show that your food does not have to lack flavor when using simple ingredients and with the changes we made in using our seasonings and salsas, to watching what we consume. I am happy to say I no longer have to be on medication for high blood pressure and that ugly cloud of depression no longer lingers around me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it has been a rewarding one. The best advice I can give a woman just starting their journey is to believe in yourself! Surround yourself with other amazing women, women that will motivate you, believe in you and always push you to be better. Find that sisterhood because WE ARE capable of anything we put our minds to.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Sabor a Mi Seasonings & Salsas story. Tell us more about the business.
What sets me apart from others is that the love I have for my culture shows in my seasonings and salsas it’s the ability to make people feel at home with just the taste of my salsas, many times I’ve heard “wow, this is how my nana’s used to taste” or “hey, this tastes like my mom’s salsa,” I love that I can give a nostalgic feeling with my products.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Honestly, since starting this business, all I’ve come in contact with are amazing, wonderful, smart and powerful women. For example, Ceci Velasquez is the co-founder of E.L.L.A -Empowering Latina Leaders in Arizona and the co-founder of The Mujeres Mercado Phoenix, it was actually the phone call I had with her that sealed the deal on me pursuing my dreams and starting this business. We as women are natural-born leaders, there is nothing we can’t do.
