Conversations with the Inspiring Crystal Boymistruk and Krystel Sam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Boymistruk and Krystel Sam.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Crystal and Krystel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We, C|K studio (Crystal and Krystel) have had parallel lives, we both studied at the Art Institute of Phoenix, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Interior Design. We both have had successful careers in the design industry, and we have been fortunate to have designed some amazing f***ing spaces.

In 2011, we finally met at a local design studio where we were partnered to work on hospitality projects (ha, you thought we met in college). At first, K wasn’t really fond of having someone with a similar name as part of her team… but C was very pushy and persistent… I guess that is a good quality… (K).

After working together for many years we realized that we are the same but different, we are our own lady gang… members only.

We learned from very talented women who shaped who we are today and helped us become strong, unapologetic designers (if you don’t know who they are, look it up).

Flash forward to 2016 after many successful projects together, an opportunity was presented to start our own design firm… SAY WHAT? Yes, we’re crazy, and yes people thought we were insane… we still are, we’re still here.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NOOOOOOOO! And if anyone tells you it is… THEY ARE WRONG! Or they don’t know what they’re doing.

The biggest struggle is building everything from the ground up, think of it as a project that you are starting from scratch, and you have nothing. You have to make something out of nothing… and the recipe instructions are in a foreign language. A lot of sacrifice takes place, and it takes a toll on your creative juices, we now have a lot of roles that we didn’t have before, and we have learned along the way to manage all of that.

Find a mentor, learn from someone who has done it before, don’t be afraid to ask for help, keep learning and mastering your craft, keep evolving and be open to change and challenges.

What should we know about C | K studio? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
If you don’t know by now, we are Interior designers we design and develop hospitality brands and experiences. We are known as the Crystals | Krystels… you chose the spelling…

We are most proud of the work we have produced in the past and on our own, and that we are still doing what love to do and we get to do it together in our lady gang.

What sets us apart is our knowledge, drive, experience and willingness to keep learning and growing as designers. The creative field is savage, there are days when you don’t feel creative at all, and there are days where your whacky ideas take you to another dimension.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Work for the best, hustle, do whatever is being asked of you (as long as it is not illegal). Do not compromise your integrity. Do your work and do it well, if you don’t know something, ask questions, always ask for help. You will fail, learn from it and keep going. If you need advice, email us!
