Conversations with the Inspiring Brandy Kocks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Kocks.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a passion for anything creative and artistic since I was a kid. In high school, I was always doing makeup for my friends for dances or nights out, and that kind of became what I was known for. Though I absolutely loved the idea of being able to totally transform someone, I always looked at it as more of a fun hobby. After I graduated high school, I was unsure about what I wanted to pursue as a career. I went to a community college and took tons of different elective courses, in hopes something might spark my interest. I found through taking classes I still had a major desire to do something hands on. I learned I do best with things that allow me to be creative. During this time, girls were still reaching out to me for makeup sessions. It then eventually turned into doing makeup for every prom, homecoming, graduation, and photos for people from my high school. From there, I started getting calls and texts from girls from all different schools, and people actually knew my name and referred me for makeup! I couldn’t believe it. It was only at that moment a light bulb went off in my head and I truly started seeing makeup artistry as a career path for me versus just doing it for fun. I decided to go on to beauty school and attain my esthetic license. From there, I landed a job with MAC cosmetics as one of their artists. Being at MAC was almost a full circle moment for me. I always thought people who worked at MAC were the coolest and most creative people in the world, and I dreamed about being a part of that team one day. I remember walking up to a MAC counter with my mom when I was 12 and telling the woman working I would be a MAC artist one day. Being at MAC was a pivotal moment for me, as it pushed me to be as creative as I wanted to be and helped me grow in my artistry immensely. In today’s time, I primarily get booked for weddings. I can not explain the excitement I have been able to be apart of a day that is important to so many women and make them feel the most beautiful. The look on their face when they see the finished look is priceless, and I hope to be a part of those moments forever.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If I could give any advice to young women, it would be to believe in yourself and never stop striving for what your passion is. Practice as much as you can, push yourself out of your comfort zone, and do not compare yourself to anyone. Everyone’s artist abilities are unique and personal, and every form of art is beautiful!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Eye Candy By Brandy story. Tell us more about it.
I specialize in bridal and prom makeup, and I would say I am known for this most. I do a lot of glamorous and timeless makeup. I am most proud of building my business/brand all on my own. It takes a lot of time, and it’s not easy to build a following, but putting in the time and work has really paid off for me. I believe what sets me apart from others is the style of makeup I do. I am drawn to makeup looks that are glamorous but also doesn’t look too heavy. I love the look of glowing skin and emphasis on the eyes. I find my goal within a makeup session is to enhance their natural beauty and to not feel like I’m painting a mask on their face.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
If anything pushed me to the love and passion I have for makeup today was watching makeup YouTube tutorials. I would sit for hours and watch Youtubers do that makeup, and I would try to do my makeup along with them. I had such a drive to be as good as they were, and I made sure to practice as much as I could. I still watch YouTube makeup tutorials daily and the makeup artists are my biggest role models and give me so much inspiration!
