Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Michael, MS, OTR/L. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Tyler Michael, MS, OTR/L, has always been passionate about helping children and adults learn, grow, and develop into people they dream of being! In high school, she spent her summers tutoring struggling children. In her spare time in college, she volunteered in Best Buddies and a SPED classroom in a local elementary school. Through these experiences, she realized how much children and youth with special needs could achieve more than many believe possible! Some years later, Tyler earned a BA in psychology and her master of Science in Occupational Therapy. She has been practicing OT for over 10 years in various settings, including the children’s hospital, outpatient clinics, elementary – high schools, and home health.
In 2016, Tyler started a Pediatric Home Health company, Capable Therapy, LLC, to provide excellent, quality therapy within children and youth’s homes. She noticed that many therapists in the home health industry seemed to operate “on an island.” Thus, she founded Capable Therapy with a culture of collaboration, positivity, empathy, and accountability. Tyler now operates as the company’s Clinical Director, where she oversees all Occupational and Speech Therapist Clinicians and provides mentorship and ongoing clinical education to Team Capable. Therapists on the team have access to the company’s mentorship program and ongoing continuing education opportunities.
Since January 2019, Tyler has served as ArizOTA’s (the Arizona Occupational Therapy Association) Pediatric Special Interest Chairman, where she has developed many continuing education events and networking opportunities for OTs in Arizona. She has also worked as an Instructor at PIMA Medical Institute’s OTA program, where she taught: Pediatric Practice, Human Growth & Development, & Communication courses. In 2018, Tyler was named “Best in Practice” in the state of Arizona by the American Health Council. Tyler has an Autism Specialist Certification. Her specialty areas include Sensory Processing, SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding Program, Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT), Pediatric Myofascial Release, Fine Motor Skills, and Visual Perception. She also has experience in the assessment & use of: SPIO vests, AmTryke Bikes, Hoyer Lifts, and Adapted Bath & Feeding Chairs. Outside of the therapy world, Tyler enjoys spending time with her husband (who operates as Capable Therapy’s Business Operations Manager), their daughter, and family and friends.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Being a strong and independent female leader since junior high school, Tyler has discovered the sad realities of gender inequality. Although Tyler has experienced and witnessed misogyny and sexual harassment in several past professional environments, she has always chosen to rise above these negatives by remaining positive, kind, and fearless. One of her life mantras is to “Be kind. Love all. Live fearlessly.” Her goal is to impact all she encounters through empathy and kindness positively! Through this mindset, she has remained true to who she knows she was made to be, a positive, kind, and fearless leader and mentor to others.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In Tyler’s company, Capable Therapy, the occupational and speech therapy team have access to a mentorship program where they are offered ongoing continuing education, monthly team learning huddles, and one on one mentorship meetings.
