Community Highlights: Meet Liz Illg of Puff & Fluff Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Illg.

Hi Liz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Puff & Fluff story began in 2013 when I opened up the doors to my first location. Opening a pet business in Phoenix felt right to me. I’d been a resident for years and fell in love with the community and I’d always had a passion for animals. I started Puff & Fluff to serve my community neighbors with luxury and trustworthy pet care. After reaching success in my first location, I set out to expand to other neighborhoods to serve more families and pets. With a loving community and excellent staff members, Puff & Fluff Grooming and Pet Sitting continue to grow and thrive.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nobody can prepare you for the journey of being a small business owner. Every day, there’s something new to discover, and whether it’s a good or a bad day, there’s a lesson to be learned. In particular, some of the hardest days or moments in my business were those that were unexpected and unplanned. Challenges like building issues, equipment maintenance, making high-level decisions during a global pandemic, and other circumstances have taught me so much about resilience and being a leader. A quote that sums up what I’ve learned in stressful situations is by Charles R. Swindoll; “life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.” No matter how big or small the challenge is, we have a mission and clients to serve, so we press forward.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Puff & Fluff Grooming and Pet Sitting provide luxury and trustworthy care to dogs, cats, and other pets in the Phoenix area. With six (and counting) locations, we’re committed to keeping family pets clean, groomed, and spoiled. Our services include grooming, bathing, haircuts, nail trimming, and in our spas, we sell pet-approved products like treats, accessories, and more. Our clients love bringing their fur-children to our spas because they can trust that they’re getting the highest level of pet comfort, treatments, and care. We make visits relaxing for both pet parents and their pets. With our exclusive Pamperships, our clients can enroll in a monthly subscription that allows them to bring their pet in for monthly groomings, baths, and unlimited services like teeth-brushing and nail trims.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say the biggest quality I have that’s led me to success is bravery. In order to be a good leader, you have to be brave. Even when it’s not easy, even in times of stress, being brave is the best thing you can do for your business, your team, and for yourself. I’ve learned so much about myself in moments where I acted in bravery. Whether it’s using your voice, making a change, starting a business, growing a business, or anything else, be brave and amazing things will happen.
