Community Highlights: Meet Jaime Tobon of Modern Dentistry of Peoria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Tobon.

Hi Jaime, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Dr. Jaime A. Tobon. I am a dentist here in town. I knew I wanted to be a dentist at about 13 years old when I went through orthodontics. I love helping people, and I knew I wanted to work in a field that impacted people’s health and lives positively. I joined the Army after high school and served from 2002-2008. Once honorably discharged from the Army, I started college at Kansas State University. I finished with a bachelor’s in Biology before entering dental school at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. After graduation, I attended a 1-year advanced education residency program where I learned advanced procedures such as sedation and implant surgery. I have continued to take hundreds of hours of continuing education since then to continue to serve my patient’s needs better. I care about my patients, and it brings me great joy to be able to help them live healthy and happy lives and be able to chew the foods they love.

Below is a copy of my bio as well:
Dr. Tobon is from Miami, FL. He is a veteran of the United States Army and a former Sergeant; his Army tours include Germany, Honduras, and Fort Riley, Kansas. After receiving an honorable discharge and being named US Army Dental Command Soldier of the Year, he set out to achieve his childhood dream of becoming a dentist.

Dr. Tobon attended Kansas State University, received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and was awarded membership in the prestigious honor society Phi Kappa Phi.

Dr. Tobon earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri. He completed oral surgery externships at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix and Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. While in dental school, he held positions in several dental organizations, including Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity and the Student National Dental Association.

Upon graduation, Dr. Tobon decided to further his education by completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency. His main focus while in residency was on advanced oral surgery procedures, including dental implant surgery and IV sedation for anxious patients.

Dr. Tobon has shown a commitment to dental excellence. He is a member of the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry and is pursuing Fellowship in the American Academy of Implant Dentists.
In his spare time, Dr. Tobon enjoys spending time with his wife Daniela and his 3 children, Adrian, Elena, and Leo. They enjoy trying new foods, traveling to new places, and going to the movies.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life can be full of obstacles and challenges. Like most people, I have had many obstacles and challenges to overcome. I have learned along the way that obstacles and challenges can shape you into a better version of yourself and encourage you to do more if you don’t give up. During my first year of dental school, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and she passed away 3 years later after surgery and chemotherapy. It was the most challenging moment I have ever been through, but I knew she would want me to continue and succeed. Her memory continues to guide me as I realized from her passing that every day is a gift we are given and our chance to make a difference in the world.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been a dentist since 2015 and decided to start my dental practice in 2018. I decided on the name Modern Dentistry of Peoria because I pride myself on always having the latest advancements in techniques and technology that can help make dentistry better for my patients and more efficient and comfortable for them. I also pride myself on being very honest and caring with my patients and helping them realize that by taking regular care of their oral health, they will give themselves the best opportunity to keep their teeth healthy and functioning well over a lifetime. I have spent years learning how to take better care of patients and am an expert in dental implant surgery. I also offer IV sedation services to help those nervous about getting dental care. I love when I can take a fearful and nervous patient and help them to receive dental care and become a healthier, more confident version of themselves with a beautiful smile. I tell my patients it can be as easy as taking a few pills, and by the time they finish their dental care, they only remember coming in and leaving the office. It makes it much easier for those who are scared.
