Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Serena Shao of Eye Lab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Serena Shao.

Hi Dr. Serena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I worked as an optometric technician at a private optometry office during high school and was inspired by the practice owner. Then during college, I shadowed another optometrist and saw how much impact an optometrist makes in a patient’s life. That’s when I knew this was what I wanted to do. After graduating from optometry school, I joined the corporate setting to gain experience. However, owning an optometry office and practicing the way I want has always been my dream, so after three years of working for others, I opened my own optometry office, Eye Lab.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I opened my office in 2021 during COVID when there were a lot of uncertainties in the economy. Construction was delayed. There’s part shortage everywhere.

As you know, we’re big fans of Eye Lab. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Eye Lab is a full-scope optometry office in Scottsdale. You can visit us for everything from eye exams to emergency eye care. We specialize in dry eye treatment and myopia control. What sets us apart is that we don’t just provide eye exams. We offer a luxurious eye care experience that will leave your eyes feeling cared for. Our number one rule in the office is to take care of our patients like how we want our grandparents to be taken care of. Customer satisfaction is what we strive for.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
There’s another fun fact on our logo. When we designed our logo, we wanted to focus on what makes us happy. And, we came up with two of our most important passions: optometry and cats. We have a resident feline that works on Saturday! Don’t forget to say hi to Simba when you are in the office.
