Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Ramirez.
Hi Connie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am the visionary behind the business.
The Day Spa is a start-up, but I’m a savvy business person who holds a Finance degree from ASU and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from UoP. Before I earned my degree, Ibowned two businesses. I’ve often helped others make their dreams of owning a business come true as a business operation development consultant.
I’ve transitioned her career in Accounting into the Tech World and have 10 plus years in System Integrations and the past three years as a Realtor. People often tell me how can I do so much, my reply is that’s how I operate. I am currently in the development of opening up a Day Spa.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. I have come this far by strange coincidence. The story goes far back to high, as I was studying in the library and overheard a group talking about a college preparatory program called Upward Bound. I went to my school counselor and asked about it. I was told the application deadline was the next day.
That program changed my life. As I heard motivational lectures telling me I can become anything I want to be. They told me and showed me how to become a better student. This was all even more challenging because I suffered from A learning disability called dyslexia. The program motivated me not to give up on myself.
I ended up attending college 10 years after graduating from high school. I earned my Bachelor’s degree at the age of 31. At age 34, I enrolled in a Master’s program and soon after that, I left my marriage with only the clothes on my back. I don’t know how to ask a company I worked for to pay me what I was worth. With a Bachelor’s degree, I could barely keep a roof over my head and had to “sometimes” fly my way into a dinner date to eat.
Often, I didn’t eat all my food so I could take leftovers to my minor sister who I took care of. I worked full-time as, a waitress after work while I was completing my master’s program. Then just as things were picking up for me, I lost my job. By this time I had completed my MBA but it took me 8 months to find a new job. I lost my home and would have been homeless if I didn’t have my mom’s couch to sleep on. I then received a call.
Informing me that I qualified for a Business Analyst role and that’s when I started earning over $100,000 a year, but I was in debt to my eyeballs that it took me years to overcome that. Now, this part changed my life again. In a similar way because my best friend and I were in-between jobs. She invited me to take a Real Estate class with her. After taking the school test 7 times and 2 state tests later, I was officially a licensed Realtor.
I then continued to work as a business analyst and Realtor at the same time. Then finally, I was able to start saving money. Money I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t spend it on expensive clothing because I’ve told myself I would never live like that. So with a business mind, I have I started looking into a possible business venture and decided to open a day spa.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The lesson I learned while I can tell you another long story but I’ll put it like my son phrase it, “Closed mouths don’t get fed”.
We have to be comfortable talking about money and wages at the workplace. Yes, someone might earn more than you, but you’ll have to understand why, and then you, yourself do that too. Once you admit your financial irresponsible learn to become financially responsible.
Hard work isn’t digging a hole and breaking your back hard work is not giving up on yourself and figuring out a way to overcome your obstacles.
