Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Kunde.
Chelsea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Building Blocks Family started shortly after I had my first baby. My career started in behavior intervention working for The Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center and then I went on to get my Master’s in Marriage and Family. I worked in community mental health for several years. My niche and favorite group to work with was families and couples specifically focusing on parenting skills. I started Building Blocks Family to provide loving family solutions to parents around the topics of sleep, discipline and potty training. BBF started with just sleep training services and has evolved into the three other topics. BBF provides private consultations and also group teaching services online and in person.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel very lucky for the most part. I took a giant leap of faith (with the push and support from close friends and my husband) and it turned out to be successful. It feels hard to say that because I don’t mean that in a bragging way but more that it worked well. This type of service and company, there was a need for it, and so it worked.
I have always had a passion for learning about and helping families. Once I started my own family, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to stay in community mental health but I knew the door of helping people was not closed. I was nervous to start this company but also felt very excited to do something I love, create a niche within this world, and go for it. I have changed my model and tweaked services along the way. I have added teaching groups to my services and have really fell in love with that aspect.
Owning a company, you learn something new every single day. There are growing pains. There are times I get worried, is this going to keep going? Am I going to be able to keep getting clients and growing? I have always said, if you are in the clinical world and you stop getting nervous to speak in front of groups or help a new family, it is time to stop. The clinical world is humbling and keeps you on your toes.
As you know, we’re big fans of Building Blocks Family. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Building Blocks Family is a company that provides services to families with children ages 0-6 years of age. The topics of services include sleep, discipline and potty training. I (Chelsea) am the owner and founder. I provide private consultations, group lectures, and online classes on each topic. BBF provides loving family solutions for families. The name represents building the foundation for your family starting with sleep in infancy and building on other topics like discipline and potty training throughout young childhood.
BBF is unique because I come from a behaviorist approach but with a therapist perspective. My passions are in healthy sleep habits, consistent routines, and logical & loving discipline. I help families to create a safe and predictable world for their kiddos while maintaining healthy and safe practices. I work with families to build a strong and supportive foundation to help migrate through all life stages. Most importantly, I help them to create a happy environment for both parents and kiddos to thrive and enjoy!
My services are very custom and I am committed to people’s success and positive outcomes when working with me.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
So many people have helped me along the way. Many friends have helped me create the services, given me feedback on what they have enjoyed or helped them, and inspired me along the way. One of my good “mom” friends and a brilliant woman, Colleen Martin helped me come up with the name. We did recently tweak it but the name Building Blocks was her idea.
My husband, Josh Kunde is my constant cheerleader, hype-man, and supporter. We often have BBF sit downs, regroups, strategizing, encouraging, bookkeeping, you name it, he does it. I would be lost on the daily without him.
My old nanny actually was my first intern. Natalie Parsi helped to build my social media, make it look professional yet inviting, and get me out of my comfort zone. She helped me to stay organized, consistent and really think about the growth of BBF. I am forever indebted to her for her encouragement, hard work, and consistency.
I recently brought on my first employee to continue to help me grow and mature my social media presence and help with all things administrative and behind the scenes. Kate Keller (my sister) was who I hired. She has been a blessing to BBF in so many ways. She has pushed me to try new things, be brave and to continue to grow. She makes my life easier every single day, so I can do what I love to do, help people. She has an innate understanding for the work I do and I could never put into words how helpful she has been.
My past supervisors both in my career and throughout school have impacted me in ways I could never adequately put down on paper. It is amazing how someone can touch you and you may never know. I try to tell all of these people in my life at some point the impact they have had on me because it has been instrumental.
