Community Highlights: Meet Cassandra Huckleberry of Reset Counseling & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Huckleberry.

Hi Cassandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for having me, I am excited to be able to share my journey with you all! What I have noticed about my field is that throughout any graduate counseling program and many many times after you will get asked a very important question: “Why did you decide to become a therapist?” The reason given at the beginning may change with experience. It did for me anyway.

When I decided to become a therapist, I knew I’d be good at it because I am an active listener, always calm under pressure and people have always felt comfortable telling me their secrets! Perfect therapy attributes, right? Right, but that’s not all. Along my professional journey as a counselor, I’ve learned to always dig deeper.

One of the things that has always been important to me is being able to provide a safe space to my clients, especially clients who due to culture, community, gender, stigma, etc. have felt shame in sharing or even feeling their emotions. Through self-reflection, I have realized that in my own cultures and environment talking about my feelings was not easily accepted and I had been feeling shame about my own emotions.

Today, I am providing the acceptance that I lacked to clients who feel like I once did, which fills me with so much comfort and gratitude. While I may have started this journey thinking I just wanted to be a therapist to help others, helping others was actually the healing I needed for myself too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or difficult in retrospect?
There were certainly some challenges! I began doing outpatient therapy in February of 2020 and very quickly learned how to make adjustments such as offering Telehealth, coming up with ways to meet with clients safely and prioritizing my personal self-care. All of these were done in order for me to be present for my clients in a space they felt most safe during a universally overwhelming and uncertain time. In retrospect, while it may have been difficult, starting this journey at such a challenging time has made me a better counselor and person.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a mental health counselor. I specialize in mood disorders (such as anxiety and depression) and eating disorders. At Reset Counseling & Wellness, we realize that having difficulty with food, thoughts and/or relationships can have an impact on the ability to move through daily life.

I work with a diverse group of clients from early childhood forward and I have found that no matter a person’s age, background, or struggle, there is always value in seeking help. I see the strength in my clients and I help them utilize those strengths to provide guidance throughout the healing process.

I use an integrative approach of goal setting and collaboration to address negative core beliefs that keep individuals feeling stuck with harmful thoughts and behaviors. My goal for each client is to contribute my skills, education, and experience in order to assist and encourage them as they move towards wellness.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve never considered luck to play a part in this journey of opening my practice, though I have considered timing to be instrumental.

During the height of the pandemic, I was working for a therapy agency in Michigan. Between adjusting to newly established precautions and loss of staff, I found myself doing much of the administrative work in addition to providing therapy. Eventually, I thought to myself “ I could have my own practice.”

Fast forward to almost a year later, my husband and I made the decision to move back to Arizona. While job searching, the idea of  starting my own practice came back to me. It seemed scary at the time because, well, I’m a therapist, not a businesswoman, but I knew it was time to take a leap of faith.

I am so glad I did, because Reset Counseling & Wellness was born and in just a short time we have grown from a small virtual practice to a brick and mortar practice that has the ability to serve the needs of more clients. This journey has taught me so much including that I can be a businesswoman, a therapist, a working mom and so much more. And let me tell you something else, I am just getting started.

Now that I think about it, that is pretty lucky after all.
