Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigael Omijie.
Hi Abigael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved drinking tea, and over the years, tea has become an important part of my health and self-care journey. This inspired me to embark on a journey to learn more about it, its history and ways that different cultures experienced it. I enjoyed visiting tea rooms and when I had the opportunity to travel to London in 2019, I took an afternoon class. I then hosted afternoon tea parties for my family and friends in my home as a way for us to spend time together. Those experiences were valuable to me because they created a space where we could completely be ourselves and connect with each other in a fun and relaxing environment.
In the beginning of 2020, I started Pot Heads Tea as a Tea Party service to bring afternoon tea experiences into other people’s homes. I had some exciting and memorable tea parties ranging from private celebrations to local community events. To make these events even more special for our customers, I began incorporating a few of my own unique tea blends, which our customers loved! They expressed interest in buying them but at the time, I wasn’t selling them independently. All the positive feedback I received inspired me to create and learn more about tea. I traveled to a tea farm with my husband and we got hands-on experience plucking tea leaves, hand-processing tea and learning from experts what it takes to make good quality tea.
Shortly after this, the pandemic shut-downs began, and with events being cancelled, I wanted to find a way to continue providing our tea blends to our customers. I shifted my focus to transitioning my business from a local tea party service to an online tea boutique where tea lovers have easy access to quality teas they can enjoy at home. Once things started opening up again, we did multiple markets to connect with our local community while growing our online community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hadn’t been a smooth road but it has been a fulfilling journey. Starting a new business and having the pandemic put a temporary stop to it was difficult but instead of focusing on the negative, I chose to focus on the things I could control. Currently, I’m getting my MBA degree full-time at ASU and balancing it all is sometimes a challenge. However, the support and love I get from our customers, my mentors, and family motivates me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Pot Heads Tea provides pure and handcrafted loose leaf teas. We strongly believe that great taste comes from pure ingredients. We carefully select ingredients that are flavorful and sustainably grown. Our blends are hand-crafted in small batches and packaged with reusable materials, keeping both our customers and the environment in mind.
I strongly believe that tea is a tool which we can incorporate into our daily lives as we pursue a lifestyle of intentionality and mindfulness. Each tea blend I create is designed to encourage and remind us to take time to fill our own cups as much as we do for others.
There are a few things that make Pot Heads Tea stand apart from others. First, our brand is fresh, modern, fun, and catered to people who want to experience new flavors and cultures. Second, our tea blends are created in-house. We don’t buy pre-made blends from anywhere else because we want to ensure we know exactly what goes into your teas and have control over the quality. I intentionally choose each ingredient, do taste tests, experimentation and creation of the recipes. If I don’t like the taste of the final product, you won’t see it in our online shop. Just as I practice intentionality and mindfulness in my personal life, I practice it in my business as well. Lastly, we love collaborating with other small businesses to spread the goodness of tea.
A few of our tea offerings from our original collection include:
– Golden Glow Tea: a detoxifying and soothing herb and botanical blend
– Rose Chocolate Chai Tea: a blissful spice and botanical blend
– Hybrid Tea: an exhilarating fusion of white, green and black tea with our favorite botanicals
Now that things have opened up again, we’re back to offering our tea party pop-up service in the Fall. For the brides, besties, or couples celebrating their union, Pot Heads Tea parties are a relaxing, convenient, and enjoyable way to celebrate life.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Start now, start somewhere. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting to have everything be perfect before you share your gifts with the world but the truth is that it won’t be, at first. You learn quicker by doing and can make adjustments as you begin learning more about your industry and customers.
