Today we’d like to introduce you to Valeria Zavala.
Hi Valeria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was first introduced to the decorative arts when I started working for a company that sold wall stencils. I would spend my days painting walls, furniture, floors, fabric, anything I could put my hand on with different patterns and filming the process, creating posts and how-to videos to inspire and educate customers on how to use the products. Since then, I got hooked. I started painting different walls in my house after work, then in my friend’s homes. The word spread, and that is how Zaval Decor started, first as a hobby or side business which later transitioned to a full-time job.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I can’t complain about it. It grew organically. I’ve had the opportunity to work with great people; interior designers, friends who became clients, and clients who have become friends. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals in the felid. But being an entrepreneur always comes with some struggles, and learning curves about running your own business, managing your time, and becoming a new mom in the mix can get a bit overwhelming. But I have enjoyed every moment of it. I think my biggest challenge is now, moving to a new state and starting over. Reaching out to designers and clients, trying to get my work out there (thanks for this interview, I’m sure this will help), and doing everything I didn’t do before, another learning curve. About once a month, I still travel back to California for jobs.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a decorative artist. I use to paint and plaster to transform spaces. I love using patterns and textures to create beautiful backdrops for your everyday life. I tell my clients that my walls become addictive, and they often confirm it. I am most known for creating feature walls in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and bathrooms. The beauty of decorative arts is that it is 100% customizable; think of wallpaper, but with no seams, easy to clean and maintain just like paint but more beautiful and the exact color you want. We can tint the paint and plaster we use to any color deck. It can be as simple as one on-tone stenciling or smooth plaster with a subtle movement or full of color and movement like a multi-color pattern of heavy textures plaster to create a distressed and aged effect. I can do anything. I don’t think I have a favorite project, but my favorite part of my job is the finished product when I’m done, tired full of paint, and then I see my client’s reactions. They often tell me later how much they enjoy that space and smile every time they go into the room. That, for me, is the best part.
What sets me apart from other painters is that I care. I pour my soul and heart into every job and treat it as if I am painting for my best friend or a family member cause that is exactly how I started painting for the people I care about the most. And that hasn’t changed; when I’m on a project, no matter how big or small that wall, that house, that project is what I care about the most.
Any big plans?
And now that I have a bit more time on my hands, I want to do all the things my busy schedule did not allow me in the past. I want to have a studio space. I want a space where I can create, and have my samples, meet with clients. I want to create more art, paint canvases and offer this as an alternative or complement for my walls also create some plaster furniture, so you will probably be seeing more of that on my feed. Another thing I would love to do once I have my space is to host some classes; teaching is something I got to do while working for the stencil company and is something I enjoyed. I want to return to that once I have the space to do it.
