Check Out Kate Warren’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Warren.

Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My creative photography journey started back in 2009 when I decided to completely uproot my life and move from Fargo, ND to Phoenix, AZ. I was alone and didn’t really know what to expect, but I felt in every fiber of my being that there was something else out there for me, so I set out to find it.

I started taking photography classes at The Art Institute of Phoenix in 2010 and graduated in 2013. My love for photography grew as I became utterly obsessed with light. Watching it, studying it, manipulating it, and using it to create stories through my work. I prefer to shoot portraits that tell a story.

My goal is to have the viewer stop and really look at the photo and feel something. The basic “smile and say cheese” type of photos bore me. My goal is to tap into my subject’s story and help them create a piece of art. I want them to walk away from our session with something they can literally hold and say, “This is mine. This is my story!”

My “style” is constantly evolving. I’ve shot basic portraits, fine art nude, professional sports, conceptual, and editorial style portraits. I’ve recently fallen in love with nature all over again, so I’ve started to re-brand myself as an adventure portrait photographer.

Tapping into my subject’s story is still the end goal, but I want to use Mother Nature to do it. This is where Odyssey Creative was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
This has been anything BUT a smooth road! Lol.

I’ve lost count on the number of times that I’ve fallen flat on my face, but the lessons I’ve taken away so far have made each failure worth enduring. I’ve shed tears, laughed until I cried, and contemplated giving up completely… but something inside me keeps saying, “absolutely not”.

So, I keep going because I’ve learned that anything in life worth having, isn’t easy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The creative process is what quite literally sets my soul on fire. My work is constantly evolving and I’ve never been able to fit myself into just one category.

I love to experiment and research lighting techniques. I live for location scouting. Gassing up the car and just going wherever the road takes me, lights a fire inside me that I just can’t quite explain. But, I know it makes me feel good, so I try to embrace that as much as possible.

People who know me, know I’m a total light nerd. I love to collaborate with other creatives and join in their creative process to help bring their ideas to life. There’s no genre of art or photography that I’ll shy away from and I think that’s allowed me to evolve as much as I have as an artist.

I’ll always be forever grateful to every artist that I’ve created with.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Make as many mistakes as possible!!! This is by far the best advice I can give anyone.

We live in a society where “perfection” is being sold everywhere.

Newsflash: perfection does NOT exist. Embrace every ounce of your true authentic self, make as many mistakes as possible, learn from them, adjust, and be unapologetic AF about it.
