Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Marshall.
Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I knew in high school I wanted to be a strength coach – after college, I ran a gym in Yuma for 2 years before getting an opportunity to run a chain in Tucson which I took and worked there for 21 years.
Two and a half years ago, I decided to go independent – I started with 3 clients and have built up to 18 in-person and over 40 online from all over the world – I also started a lifting gear company 8 years ago with my fiancé – it’s called Unbreakable Gear.
Traveling around the country doing events with the gear company has also helped me with the online part of my training company – at these events, I started coaching athletes too and now I am gone about 30 weeks a year coaching at competitions.
I never thought I would end up growing into this but it’s been one fun ride.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a very smooth road – I’ve been competing myself for 40 years so I had alot of contacts in the industry to help get the word out for the gear company and with training.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Personal Trainer/Strength Coach and President of Unbreakable Gear.
So I specialize in Strength Sports but I also love working in rehab for seniors – Hearing their stories and helping them get better is so much fun. SO my day starts off with responding to my clients about their workouts from the day before. Then i pack up all the gear orders and head to gym for my in person clients . Energy filled day keeping them fired up to reach their goals in a BIG part of my program . You have to keep the client engaged . They need to be excited to come see you and know together we will hit that goal.
After all of them are done its my turn to train myself . Have to lead by example, Right ? So i knock out my session then go home . Thats what an average work day looks like for me. Very Fun but tiring at time . The reward watching my athletes and clients progress is awesome, You just cant beat it.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The desire to never be finished – There is something to always learn to make yourself better – SO every day that’s my goal to be better and beat yesterday.
