Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay-Lee Smith.
Hi Jay-Lee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for makeup started in high school. Pre-youtube, I would stay up late at night creating extreme looks on myself. That turned into me being the one to get all of my friends ready for dances and proms. I knew this was the path for me and headed to cosmetology school after I graduated. I learned so much about hair and makeup in cosmetology school, I now had the skills to offer both! After many years working in salons, I realized I needed to be in a more creative atmosphere. Hairstyling and makeup was my true love, not cutting and coloring.
I had the opportunity to work under an amazing mentor who taught me everything she knew about beauty and business. I’ve specialized in special event and bridal makeup for the last five years, but moving to Phoenix 3 years ago is when my passion and business really took off! Arizona has welcomed me with open arms. Me and my business couldn’t be happier here!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding my home and my niche was definitely a struggle. After cosmetology school, I thought the natural thing to do would be to work in a salon. I hopped from hair salon to hair salon, but never found the right fit. Cutting and coloring hair never gave me the fire that hair STYLING and makeup does. I knew I needed to change and pursue my true dreams of the styling and makeup world. When I was given the opportunity to apprentice under my mentor Nancy of @msnancyz Beauty team my skills, drive, and knowledge really took off. I slowly built up my portfolio by glamming up anyone I could get my hands on, and working for free on any photoshoot set that would have me.
There is no set path for freelance artists. We have all had to figure out our own ways to navigate creating our own jobs, and walk the line of creativity and business. I am grateful for all the obstacles in the path that lead me here today. I have had my cosmetology license now for fourteen years, and just finally have found my true happy place in my career journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I own Superstition Makeup Co. I am the lead hairstylist and makeup artist, and also have a team of ten amazing and talented women that take care of our brides and clients with me. We specialize in a natural and effortless approach to hair and makeup, and I think that’s what makes us stand out. We are all about enhancing your natural beauty, and do not believe you need to be caked in makeup to get there. Many of our brides and clients wear next to no makeup on a daily basis, so the process of finding an artist who specializes in soft, light, and natural makeup can be daunting. That’s what we are here for! We take extra care, and extra time with our natural brides because we understand how intimidating it can be to sit in a professional makeup artist’s chair for the first time.
I am so proud of the team that I have built to service our clients and brides. The Superstition girls are not only insanely talented, but also amazing, warm souls whom I train, trust, and love. They have become some of my closest friends. I would never be where I am today without them and their help expanding my business. I am so proud of each and everyone of them, and I love watching their talents and careers grow.
How do you think about happiness?
I find most of my fulfillment and happiness in life through my business. It’s my baby! It has given me the structure, responsibility, and driving force I have always been looking for. Each and every inquiry means there is someone out there who believes in me and my team. Each and every client booking us is someone helping me and my girls live out our dreams of being freelance artists.
When I’m not working on my business I find joy in spending time in nature with my husband and our fur babies. We fell in love with the beauty of Arizona, and it is the perfect home for our lifestyle. We love kayaking and camping in the summer, and hiking and exploring in the winter. There is nothing better than a nice long walk on a 75 degree day and ending the night snuggled up on the couch with my dogs. The simple things in life make me happy, because the life I have today is one I always dreamed of.
