Check Out Jasmyn Coleman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmyn Coleman.

Hi Jasmyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my photography journey at a young age following in the footsteps of my father who was also a photographer. I quickly became fascinated with documenting my everyday life! In high school, I honed in my skills with a black and white film photography class where I fell in love with the behind-the-scenes process in the darkroom developing film. Landscapes, nature, and travel were my main subjects for many years.

It wasn’t until I became pregnant that I found a love and passion for documenting human connection. My pregnancy opened my mind to a whole new world, full of feminine energy as I gleamed awaiting the arrival of my daughter. I embraced the extra curves that were forming and felt like an empowered goddess! I had a new love for my body, despite “imperfections.” My heart was full of extraordinary joy. This feeling carried on postpartum.

Now raising a daughter of my own, I felt called to help heal and empower other women through photographs. My journey into motherhood compelled me the want to spread the same energy to other women- to uplift and empower women through such an emotionally charged time in their lives. There’s a copious amount of healing necessary as women shift through the transformation into motherhood…not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. It is such a beautiful process regardless of the stress and exhaustion that comes with it. No matter how many children you have because each pregnancy is different and requires a certain level of nurturing. The women I’m photographing see their natural beauty and can love themselves just as they are exactly where they are right now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started my business a few months before the pandemic hit, so that was the biggest struggle I endured. Just like most businesses, I had to learn to shift my way of doing things. Photoshoots are very hands-on, close, and personal so I had to approach them differently. The process required me to be more creative in my approach and communication with clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in lifestyle motherhood portraits, capturing genuine connections, and creating heirloom printed artwork full of nostalgia. My work focuses on naturally documenting families as they grow through maternity, newborn, first-year milestones, and beyond. I highlight putting moms in front of the camera because they are often taking photos in their everyday lives. Each session is a custom-designed experience suited to fit each family’s needs. I take care of all of the details including wardrobe and styling, location choice, and guidance for posing so that my clients have a stress-free experience and spend more time connecting. Sessions with me are laid-back and baby/child-led, leading to a relaxed photoshoot while also showing unique personalities.

I am especially passionate about each family having printed photographs and provide printing services in all of my packages. I strongly believe that photographs are meant to be enjoyed daily and displayed around the home or within easy reach within an album. There is a sentimental value to having family gather together to look over photos and reminisce. They’re not meant to be left on hard drives.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The Bokeh Podcast is one of my favorites as it covers a wide range of topics of running a photography business. I read and listen to almost anything that helps with personal and business development. I feel the journey of being an entrepreneur makes you evolve personally along the way and clarify your message. One of my favorite books is Start with Why by Simon Sinek.
