Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Flickinger.
Melissa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
In 2009, I was inspired by a pendant I saw at the runner’s expo for my first half marathon in Phoenix. It was hand stamped and I wanted it! I was planning to buy it for myself as a reward after the race. But instead, I began researching the art of hand stamped jewelry, bought some supplies and made myself the pendant! I started making gifts for friends and then wondered what would happen if I turned my new craft into an actual business… so, I did.
I have a degree in interior design and love working with my hands. I have so many interests and am constantly starting new projects. I am not meant to do “just one thing”… the possibilities are endless!
I love being able to work from my home studio. I personally stamp, polish and package every order. There is a little bit of love in every order I ship.
I am a work from home momma to two amazing littles – our daughter is in kindergarten and our son is almost three. They keep us laughing and they certainly keep us on our toes! They inspire me to always put my best foot forward and humble me with unconditional love even on those days when my ‘best’ is chicken nuggets for dinner while we watch the magic school bus rides again.
Working from home whilst raising kids certainly has challenges. Sometimes, I find myself working when I should be relaxing + playing with my kids and then sometimes, I end up relaxing when I should be working. I am convinced that ‘balance’ is a mirage in the land of work-from-home-momma, so I just do the best I can every day and cross my fingers that it all works out.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
The bulk of my business is creating hand stamped, personalized jewelry – mommy necklaces and other jewelry items using inspirational words and quotes. Every character is stamped one letter at a time using individual steel stamps. The spacing and depth of each character stamped will vary, making each piece unique.
I love having the opportunity to create such meaningful items. Sometimes, I receive orders to celebrate a new life or an accomplishment or a union. But I also get a lot of orders to honor the loss of loved ones. While those are the hardest to make, my hope is always that my craft is bringing more smiles to this world.
I recently launched a new collection; marked. by malisay designs. It is a simple collection of only three products, garden markers, bookmarks and golf ball markers. I am so very excited to share what is coming next for malisay designs and my new collection this spring.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice to other artists is to follow your heart and don’t give up. malisay designs is almost ten years old and the one lesson I wish I would have learned earlier is to NOT overthink things. If you have an idea, go for it. That’s the only way to find out if it’s gonna work or not. An idea or concept doesn’t have to be perfect, you just have to be willing to trust the process.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be seen in person at Made with Love Market in Gilbert as well as other pop up markets throughout the Valley. My market schedule is available on my website.
A super easy way to support my work is to follow me on Instagram and let me know when you see something you love.
