Art & Life with Kirby Plessas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirby Plessas.

Kirby was born in Butte, Montana and attended college in Montana and North Dakota before joining the US Army as an Arabic Linguist and Military Intelligence analyst. She served 6 years, then, worked as a contracting middle east analyst at Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. She was then recruited as a contractor to help with an innovation center for another intelligence agency. In 2008, Kirby opened her own small business (plessas.net) specializing in internet investigations, working often with social media and pioneering OSINT investigations in the elusive “Dark Web”.

In 2014, Kirby moved to Arizona, and in 2016 to the North Phoenix/North Scottsdale/Cave Creek area, where she was inspired by her surroundings to dive more actively into a long-time interest of art.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I had been painting abstract pop art while living in Washington, DC, but have transitioned into more abstract works, including my current obsession with fluid art. My work is characterized by bright colors, often blue and turquoise. I also provide workshops on fluid art as well as computer skills and social media for artists. I have recently been featured in the Art Edit of House & Garden Magazine for August-October 2018.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Art doesn’t need a big budget, only creativity. When you start, find supplies where you can, including places like discount stores, hardware stores, garage and estate sales, and thrift shops.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is on display at The Gallery at El Pedregal at the Boulders Resort in Scottsdale through October 2018. I am active on Instagram as KirbyPlessasArt. I will also soon be available on YouTube where viewers will be able to watch the artistic process on a regular basis.
