#AZCreatives: the local artists who inspire us

Through a mix of mediums, formats and perspectives local artists illuminate the unknown, color the previously black-and-white and add depth to our understanding of our surroundings, our lives, circumstances and more. Through our research process for the Thought provokers series we’ve come across so many works of art that have inspired us and we’d like to share some of those great examples of visual and performing arts, photography and other creative works with you below.

“Dear Acme, what’s an underbase?” If you want to print light colors on dark items we recommend either using an underbase with standard plastisol inks or using discharge inks if they’ll work properly on the material (long story). An underbase is a layer of white or gray ink printed under the color you want to see. Why, you ask? Simple really. It’s like trying to paint a black room white (dang goths); one coat just wouldn’t do it. Without an underbase, the dark colored fabric usually shows through the inks, making the print appear kind of transparent, dark or faded. This could be a benefit if you’re going for the Urban Outfitters-esque vintage look. Printing on top of the underbase makes the ink appear more opaque so that it really sticks out on the shirt. An underbase counts as another ink since we need an additional screen, so it adds a little to the price. * #AcmePrints #phoenixaz #localphoenix #downtownphoenix #drphx #downtownphx #localfirstaz #localMusic #azartist #myphx #locallove #phxmade #azmade #phoenixmusicscene #azgrown #ThisIsALotOfHashtags

She Walks in Beauty She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow But tell of days in goodness spent A mind at peace with all below A heart whose love is innocent! -Lord Byron #lordbyron #artandpoetry #artandliterature #classicliterature

Swirl stoneware(B-mix) plate with multiple sprayed glazes: Red Orange, Transparent Green, SCM-warm, Juicy Fruit-iron, Frost Green and Fake Ash. I glazed this plate as part of a workshop I participated in last year with Steven Hill @stevenhillpottery at David Lee’s 323 Clay @323clay studio in Missouri. They were wonderful hosts and I learned a great deal from throwing and trimming porcelain, to spraying glazes for atmospheric effects in an electric oxidation kiln, to hands-on experience using better spraying equipment that really gives the user optimal control. If you ever get the chance to participate in one of Steven’s workshops, do it! You won’t regret it! I hope to join him again in the future for a throwing workshop as his forms are beautiful and his talks are truly inspirational. Thanks again to Steven and all the wonderful people at 323 Clay! _____________________________________ #glazedandamazed #glazeofourlives #microcrystallineglaze #sprayedglazes #azartist #functionalware #tableware #ceramics #tablewares #oneofakindceramics #kilnchristmas #foodstylingprops #potteryofinstagram #thishandmadelife #potterylife #potterylove #makersmovement #claystagram #pottersofinstagram #kilnfolk #claylife #claylove #workshoptalk #womeninclay #anitariesceramics
